With the Grip recovery strap mentioned above, it is a pretty stiff pull/ yank. With nylon, you are supposed to have a much softer yank. When you go from 0-20 and pull someone out, it tends to bounce everything around quite a bit. Then repeat this about 10 times in a day. Yeah, we have been there. The softer and easier you can get those pulls, the easier it is on everything, your back, your 4Runner, and the driver of the other truck.
How much weight your vehicle can handle while it is towing a car or trailer is perhaps the most important factor that people will look at when they are deciding what type of truck hitch to purchase. As briefly stated above, shackle hitches are the most affordable way to get a hitch that can handle weight over 10,000 pounds. Since this is more than the normal weight that people will drag around, many people with heavy-duty needs will get this design.
Heavy, solid, and it fits the 2″x2″ receiver perfectly. A 5/8″ locking hitch pin is now needed. Has to be a locking type because this shackle is so attractive a thief could hardly pass it up. In doing research, I found that hitch pins come in different lengths; I had bought one that was a bit too short to pass through the holes in my Toyota Tacoma receiver, which has 1/2″ thick walls. So beware.
A fastener is a fastener, they don't have a preference for shear or tension. A grade 5 hitch pin is the same as a grade 5 bolt of the same diameter along the unthreaded length. What you have to watch using a bolt is that you either get it long enough that only the unthreaded part of the bolt is in shear or you adjust the bolt's rating down to the minor diameter compensate. For a 5/8-18 UNF the minor diameter is 0.556".
That's going to allow for easy and quick connect and disconnect of the recovery strap . Now, this is going to be great for ATVs and UTVs that have an 1-1/4" hitch on it. It is going to require a 1/2" hitch pin and clip or lock to get it secured into the hitch. That item is sold separately. You can find those right here at etrailer.com. I bought this gear and a tow strap from Rhino USA after watching multiple winter YouTube clips of trucks helping folks out of ditches on the east coast. Figured it would come in handy sooner or later. Turned out much sooner. On the start of my drive from Homer AK to Anchorage AK I drove past a van in the ditch with a bunch of kids trying to push it out. Another SUV tried pulling them out with a rope but only managed to entrench her tires more. I asked the gentleman if I could give it a try since I had gear and a truck. I attached the hitch receiver, tow strap and hook and pulled her out without much hassle. Thankful I bought this gear and hope to lend a hand to folks in the future.
