This is an amazing product, would recommend to anyone that wants to make their truck look like a beast, works great with all size tow straps, can get some serious work done, fits perfect with a traditional 2 inch hitch, 5/8s pin fits perfect, i recommend buying a locking pin with your purchase of this hook, Solid forged steel, all soild one piece, sturdy clamp, This hook is HUGE no joke, 25lbs!!! Could barely lift it off my porch, Great customer service, they reply to emails within hours. Overall very happy with my Bulldog Big Dog Tow Hook! 468278

Somebody mentioned the truck weight but keep in mind that just truck weight is fine if pulling on pavement with no incline. Pulling up hill means working against gravity. But you will most likely not need to pull yourself out of a mall parking spot and much more pulling power will be needed to get yanked out of mud, which is a much more likely possibility.

This hitch-mounted cargo carrier has everything you need to transport your gear safely, including a lockable lid and weather-resistant bag. The sturdy steel carrier sidewalls fold down for easy cargo or tie-downs Deters theft when used with a padlock (sold separately) with a 3/8" diameter shackle Mounts to Carpod sidewalls with built-in brackets Durable, black polyester bag provides privacy
I wonder if that's just theoretical or if it has actually happened though. Hitch pins are so thick I have a hard time picturing one actually bending much less breaking, with the normal loads of recovery.. especially with the elastic recovery strap. Also though, even if it breaks, wouldn't the pin just stay in the reciever while the strap flies out?
Shackle hitches are used together with either a recovery strap, tow strap or snap strap or a winch cable. Its job is to provide a solid connection point so you can rescue a stuck vehicle. That could be one that's bogged down in mud, trapped in a ditch or perhaps stuck on a rock. With a winch and snatch block, (a type of pulley,) you can even do a self-recovery, pulling yourself free.
As a result, we have prepared this page in order to help truck owners find the right hitch that will suit their needs perfectly without draining their wallet. In any case, there is no reason that you should pay too much for a truck hitch. For your reference, we have carefully picked the best truck hitches for towing so that you can explore the top options before reaching a purchasing decision.
I ended up buying the Vault Cargo Management Hitch Shackle, the reviews on Amazon were better than the Smittybilt and it was essentially the same price. It has an extra hole so it can be mounted so the shackle is vertical as well. The finish on the product is excellent and that seemed to be a big complaint on the Smittybilt. The link has a short blog post I did with a few pics of the Vault Cargo Hitch.
Polyester Recovery Straps stretch about 2% so they are pretty stiff. With Polyester recovery straps you have more of a stable, controlled yank when pulling someone’s truck out. With polyester recovery straps, you have a solid pull from the start but you don’t want to have a very large gap and delay in the pull. With polyester straps, you want short jerks or short pulls, not long driving starts. Polyester recovery straps are great for a quick pull if you are on stable ground and someone else is stuck and the distance is relatively close.
For your 2004 Chevy Avalanche the Rhino Rack roof rack part numbers # RREB137B, # RRRLKVA, # RREB-FK1 and # DK227 has been confirmed as a fit and would work well. Your sunroof wouldn't be an issue either. I would recommend keeping it closed since it will be very loud transporting a ladder up there from the wind noise. However, I have a better solution for you in terms of a roof rack for securing a ladder. Instead I would recommend the Rhino Rack HD bar roof rack part numbers # RB1375,...

I looked at several similar items before purchasing this one. Where the d-ring bolt goes thru, a couple of other brands had thin "ears" welded to the end of the mount. Not being a believer in factory claims of tow ratings, these didn't have the look of strength they claimed. This hitch appears to be milled from a solid piece of steel. If it indeed is 2 pieces welded together, they did an outstanding job in doing so. Unless I need to use a ball-mount hitch, I plan to leave this mounted in the receiver. To that end, I put some Loctite on the bolt before screwing it into the shackle, and then added a small cable tie from the bolt eye to the shackle. Barring a determined shackle thief, it should always be there if I need it. I can't imagine backing into something that would harm this hitch. The only complaint I have is how loose the mount is in the receiver. Several wrappings of duct tape just in front of the hitch pin hole quieted the rattle. A more snug fit would have earned 5 stars.

It simply becomes an attachment point for a strap. This is a 2 and a half inch by 2 and a half inch class 5 receiver mount with a 7/8th inch shackle. It's going to be designed for 2 and a half inch by 2 and a half inch hitches. It's CNC machined, so it's a solid steel mount with a nickel plating for corrosion resistance. Then here at the shackle we're going to have the forged alloy steel shackle and that's going to have a zinc plating on it to resist rust and corrosion. The brake strength rating for this unit is 78,000 pounds and the working load limit is 13,000 pounds.

From that center one, we're looking at 1-1/2". Then from the one that's closest to the shackle. That's going to give us a measurement of 2-1/4". Now, if we take a measurement from the center of those hitch pinholes to the back of the shackle, the closest point, there, of the shackle . the closest pinhole to the shackle is going to be 1". That center one, right here up top, that's going to be 1-3/4, and to the very back pinhole, that's going to be about 2-1/2". Pretty simple installation. You'll need to determine which way you want this positioned in your hitch. Slide this piece into the receiver opening of the hitch and then secure it in your hitch using a hitch pin and clip or hitch lock. That's going to do it for today's look at part number BDW20239.
Every off-road vehicle breaks down from time to time. If you don't want to have a bolted-on tow hook on your off-roader, a D-ring hitch placed in your receiver will provide the high-powered towing you need. You can keep them in all the time like a regular ball hitch receiver or simply have it available when needed. Tow your new rig to your house or the shop or simply have it on hand as part of your recovery kit. Tow straps easily work with the tow hitch shackle. Simply unscrew the bolt then place the loop of the strap and bolt back together. Hand tightening should be all that you need to do to keep the strap in place. Don't turn the shackle when towing because you could bend the metal. Keep the tow strap on the flat part of the D-ring and keep you and your vehicle safe.
There are a number of ways Jeeps get stuck when off-roading. You may drive through a patch of mud you thought was solid but turned out to still be fairly wet. Snowstorms are able to trap Jeeps, or you may even try to drive through a small crack in the road only to get caught on something. Regardless of the reason, you need to get your vehicle out. A shackle hitch is a great investment, and while you are not going to need it all the time, you are able to rest easy knowing it is there.

Love the Bulldog winch 3/4" ×1-1/4 shackle. Its very strong, works & looks great, on my Scrambler 1K. I've had the bulldog for over a year now and it has not let me down. I had a difificult time finding a shackle of this size and quality here in Canada. Until I came across etailer.com. I would definitely recommend this shackle for any atv/utv with a 1-1/4 hitch. I need to get 2 more for the RzR & Ace and for me it's a no brainer where I'll be ordering again from etrailer.com made easy. Thanks 547879
