Whether you are moving, attaching a trailer to your truck, or simply preparing for the future, truck hitches are a great way of ensuring that your truck can always haul everything that it needs to. Truck hitches are a very effective tool that can be used for hooking up your truck to a separate trailer or anything that has wheels and the opposite truck hitch for connecting it. Although there are many benefits that can come with owning your own truck hitch, many people are turned off by the ridiculous prices that some outlets offer.
It simply becomes an attachment point for a strap. This is a 2 and a half inch by 2 and a half inch class 5 receiver mount with a 7/8th inch shackle. While it is good to have a D ring receive hitch in your Jeep just in case, it is always preferable to avoid a nasty situation in the first place. A D ring hitch is useful, but it is also good if you always carry a first aid kit, jack and shovel in your Jeep, too.
Third, think about whether you want one hole or two through the receiver block for the hitch pin. The advantage of two is that it lets you insert the shackle hitch with the bolt either horizontal or vertical. The difference depends on whether there's any height difference between the two vehicles. If the vehicle being rescued is down in a ditch for example, it may be helpful to insert the shackle with the bolt horizontal to get some vertical movement.

Considering a hitch pin is meant to be loaded in shear vs the bolt in tensile plus the larger minimum diameter of the pin...I'd go with the pin. The actual block depends on what brand you buy. I think my Smittybuilt is a solid chunk of (Chinese) steel that I really doubt is going to fail before something else. The shackle on the other hand, you'd be better off not getting the Smittybuilt Chinese version.

Heavy, solid, and it fits the 2″x2″ receiver perfectly. A 5/8″ locking hitch pin is now needed. Has to be a locking type because this shackle is so attractive a thief could hardly pass it up. In doing research, I found that hitch pins come in different lengths; I had bought one that was a bit too short to pass through the holes in my Toyota Tacoma receiver, which has 1/2″ thick walls. So beware.

I recieved this a few days ago. It came in a nicely packed, sturdy box. After opening it up and seeing it for myself, I have to say the quality is awesome! Its a HEAVY shackle. The matte finish on the reciever end is superb (this piece must weigh about 7-10 lbs on its own). The shackle itself has a nice galvanized coating, and weighs about 6-7 lbs! Overall I think it is an awesome addition to any truck, looks great and has all the functionality that you'll probably need out of a shackle. 5/5 would reccomend! 457088
Those pins are debatably fine for towing, if they are the right strength. Grades of bolts basically indicate their hardness and therefore tensile strength. Grade 2 (normal cheap stuff) you can bend a few times and still have a viable bolt for holding a picture on your wall. They're pretty soft. The one thing they don't do well is high tensile forces. The soft steel will either strip the threads or literally pull the fastener apart. Grade 5 bolts add a significant amount of tensile strength but can still take side loads with composure. They will bend a decent amount before breaking. Grade 8 bolts are very high tensile strength. They are best used in applications where their entire load is tension. They don't like to bend. I used to use grade 8 bolts through a chain link to hoist engines until I lost one. I had a grade 8 bolt threaded in the whole way into a head. It didn't bend a bit before shearing off flush with the head. I won't talk about the brand new polished aluminum oil pan or $400 radiator that bit the dust in the process.

Since these products are typically made of metal, a common issue that could result is rust and corrosion. It seems that the negative reviews about size variations are from a few years ago, and based on the one I received, they seem to have the size right. The main block on mine (drawbar?) measures 1.90 inches wide and 1.97 inches tall. My 4Runner hitch measures 2.08 inches wide and tall, so there is about 1/8" of extra space between the receiver and the drawbar. Without a pin, there is quite a bit of play, but with the pin inserted, it's pretty snug.
Partially this is so that I can snug everything down and prevent the pin/bolt from vibrating and rotating. With a lock washer the bolt is nice and tight, no movement or rotation to wear anything. I also feel better that the bolt has washers and shoulders for a little more resistance to deflecting or the receiver trying to spread or twist. I just don't like that hitch pins can move around so much.
Their yields are 92 ksi and 130 ksi, so a hitch pin would be 27,600 lbf and 39,000 lbf before leaving their elastic region. Where the difference in grade 5 and 8 comes in is that grade 5 has min tensile yield of 120 ksi and grade 8 150 ksi, so each could potentially fail at 40,000 lbf or 50,000 lbf respectively, so obviously there is a broader region where a grade 5 bolt would bend (from 92 to 120 ksi) compared to a grade 8 (from 130 to 150 ksi). But notice that the grade 5 bolt fails before the grade 8 even hits its elastic limit.
Polyester Recovery Straps stretch about 2% so they are pretty stiff. With Polyester recovery straps you have more of a stable, controlled yank when pulling someone’s truck out. With polyester recovery straps, you have a solid pull from the start but you don’t want to have a very large gap and delay in the pull. With polyester straps, you want short jerks or short pulls, not long driving starts. Polyester recovery straps are great for a quick pull if you are on stable ground and someone else is stuck and the distance is relatively close.

Both run all the way through the shank. That's designed so you can use it whether it's in the vertical or horizontal mounting position. You can install it inside your trailer hitch receiver just like this or you can flip it to this position here and still install it inside the same hitch. You can use it in either the horizontal or vertical position. The shackle is removable. This portion right here is just like a large screw.

Smittybilt is a decent brand. They just take generic things and put their name on them and mark them up in price. Their D rings are no different than any others you'd find on Amazon. My buddy put some on his XJ Jeep and the red powdercoat they used was evidently just an epoxy or something else not UV-stable, and faded to pink in a short time. He bought generic replacements for them and they were identical to the Smittybilt.

I purchased a few items from this company and ended up returning them due to what I feel is a very deceptive marketing tactic they've chosen to use. It's clear from they're choice of labeling and branding that they're trying to imply that their products are proudly made in the USA, which couldn't be further from the truth. Even the labeling on the boxes is in my opinion deceptive as they state "Made in the PRC!" like people aren't going to figure out the the PRC is "The Peoples Republic of China". Your products might be decent, but I won't support your company simply based on the unethical marketing. If you want to make your products offshore, that's fine, but OWN IT!
