This is a great tow hitch to consider purchasing if you are already the owner of a ball mount and need a little extra kick to your towing capacity. As we all know, shackle hitches tend to carry a little more weight than their ball mount counterparts. This is why many will consider them to be the best truck hitches for towing. Since this one in particular comes with resistance to rust, thanks to its rugged powder coating, it is also guaranteed to last a longer time than one without these protections.

Somebody mentioned the truck weight but keep in mind that just truck weight is fine if pulling on pavement with no incline. Pulling up hill means working against gravity. But you will most likely not need to pull yourself out of a mall parking spot and much more pulling power will be needed to get yanked out of mud, which is a much more likely possibility.

I hate empty receiver hitches, but I also hate having my shin or knee taken out by a hitch.  So a while back I bought a shackle hitch for my lifted and locked Jeep Cherokee from Harbor Freight.  Wimpiest little thing I ever saw, it was almost embarrassing to have it mounted on my Jeep.  Then, enter Rhino USA as a TT sponsor.  I always at least check out the products from new sponsors here, so I went to their website to see what they had to offer.  Their shackle hitch immediately caught my eye, it was massive.  16 ton capacity!  I could pull a house with that thing if my Cherokee were capable of doing so.  Ordered one up and when I got it I was even more impressed seeing it in person.  Very nice black finish, the hitch itself looks to be bombproof, and the shackle is the heaviest duty one I have seen short of the stuff they use in the oil field.  My receiver is not empty, and I'm not embarrassed either.

Their yields are 92 ksi and 130 ksi, so a hitch pin would be 27,600 lbf and 39,000 lbf before leaving their elastic region. Where the difference in grade 5 and 8 comes in is that grade 5 has min tensile yield of 120 ksi and grade 8 150 ksi, so each could potentially fail at 40,000 lbf or 50,000 lbf respectively, so obviously there is a broader region where a grade 5 bolt would bend (from 92 to 120 ksi) compared to a grade 8 (from 130 to 150 ksi). But notice that the grade 5 bolt fails before the grade 8 even hits its elastic limit.

This hitch works by mounting it directly to the frame of the vehicle behind you, allowing the two vehicles to work almost as if they were one. However, keep in mind that you should not tow heavy-duty weights or vehicles with this vehicle. Since there is not a clear weight capacity with this hitch, it is best used for loads that are lighter than the vehicle you already use.

I looked at several similar items before purchasing this one. Where the d-ring bolt goes thru, a couple of other brands had thin "ears" welded to the end of the mount. Not being a believer in factory claims of tow ratings, these didn't have the look of strength they claimed. This hitch appears to be milled from a solid piece of steel. If it indeed is 2 pieces welded together, they did an outstanding job in doing so. Unless I need to use a ball-mount hitch, I plan to leave this mounted in the receiver. To that end, I put some Loctite on the bolt before screwing it into the shackle, and then added a small cable tie from the bolt eye to the shackle. Barring a determined shackle thief, it should always be there if I need it. I can't imagine backing into something that would harm this hitch. The only complaint I have is how loose the mount is in the receiver. Several wrappings of duct tape just in front of the hitch pin hole quieted the rattle. A more snug fit would have earned 5 stars.

The CURT Class 3 trailer hitch is the The CURT Class 3 trailer hitch is the most common type of trailer hitch installed on full-size pickup trucks and SUVs. Recovery straps are an essential item in your off-road gear bag. Straps and shackles might be one of the most important items you can carry around with you at all times in your 4Runner. For the core accessories, you should carry around straps, recovery hitch receivers, shackles, jumper cables, flashlights, general tools, first-aid kits, along with a few others.
Those pins are debatably fine for towing, if they are the right strength. Grades of bolts basically indicate their hardness and therefore tensile strength. Grade 2 (normal cheap stuff) you can bend a few times and still have a viable bolt for holding a picture on your wall. They're pretty soft. The one thing they don't do well is high tensile forces. The soft steel will either strip the threads or literally pull the fastener apart. Grade 5 bolts add a significant amount of tensile strength but can still take side loads with composure. They will bend a decent amount before breaking. Grade 8 bolts are very high tensile strength. They are best used in applications where their entire load is tension. They don't like to bend. I used to use grade 8 bolts through a chain link to hoist engines until I lost one. I had a grade 8 bolt threaded in the whole way into a head. It didn't bend a bit before shearing off flush with the head. I won't talk about the brand new polished aluminum oil pan or $400 radiator that bit the dust in the process.

With the Grip recovery strap mentioned above, it is a pretty stiff pull/ yank. With nylon, you are supposed to have a much softer yank. When you go from 0-20 and pull someone out, it tends to bounce everything around quite a bit. Then repeat this about 10 times in a day. Yeah, we have been there. The softer and easier you can get those pulls, the easier it is on everything, your back, your 4Runner, and the driver of the other truck.

I ended up buying the Vault Cargo Management Hitch Shackle, the reviews on Amazon were better than the Smittybilt and it was essentially the same price. It has an extra hole so it can be mounted so the shackle is vertical as well. The finish on the product is excellent and that seemed to be a big complaint on the Smittybilt. The link has a short blog post I did with a few pics of the Vault Cargo Hitch.

This heavy-duty trailer hitch accessory features a 2-1/2" x 2-1/2" shank, allowing it to fit hardworking class 5 trailer hitches, including any CURT Commercial Duty class 5 hitch. Next up is the MOTORMIC Shackle Hitch Receiver. The reason I like this one is because of the added accessories that comes with the d ring hitch. They include a hitch receiver pin and also a red isolator so this thing doesn’t clank when hitting the trail. Rated at 11,000 Pounds, more than double the weight of standard truck or Jeep! Designed for rescue in any kind of situation with a multi point mounting like the Mile Marker. The 2-inch Receiver Hitch by MOTORMIC is designed to allow the ¾-inch D-Ring to swing horizontally or vertically for extensive recovery anchor point options. All in all a good choice because of the added bonus items!
Most people who are looking for a hitch will typically get one of three different types of hitches: shackle hitches, ball mount hitches, or receiver mount hitches. People who simply want to have the highest weight capacity will normally purchase a shackle hitch since they have impressive towing weight capacities. However, if you would prefer the design of a ball mount hitch or receiver mount hitch, they are all viable options which are equally as easy to use once they are installed.
