Partially this is so that I can snug everything down and prevent the pin/bolt from vibrating and rotating. With a lock washer the bolt is nice and tight, no movement or rotation to wear anything. I also feel better that the bolt has washers and shoulders for a little more resistance to deflecting or the receiver trying to spread or twist. I just don't like that hitch pins can move around so much.
Thanks for the tips on the benefits of polyester recovery straps. They’re stiff since they stretch about 2% and provide more of a stable, controlled yank when pulling someone’s truck out. This is a good tip to share with my husband since we just bought an SUV. Thanks for mentioning that polyester recovery straps are the way to go for a quick pull if you are on stable ground. Thanks for the advice!
Nice looking piece, what you would expect from a simple shackle hitch reciever. Shackle itself also a nice piece... down fall is the extremely loose fit in a 2" reciever. Planned on running this full time as a front recovery point in my Trail Gear tube bumper but it rattles and clanks around over any sort of bumps. Ended up purchasing a different shackle hitch reciever for less here on amazon that came with shackle, hitch pin, shackle, polyurethane shackle isolators and it fit nice and snug. If the fit was better I would have been happy with this purchase. Ended up needing to use it and scuffed the finish otherwise I would have returned it.
Once the products arrived, the quality spoke for itself. WOW! The tow strap is just plain sexy (if you can say that about a tow strap). It is very well made and is unlike any other tow strap I have seen. The shackles appear to be incredibly durable. I will update this review once I have spent more time putting these products to test on the trails. I also LOVE that they attach their logo and the American Flag to the tow strap.
Quickly and easily convert your B&W Turnoverball gooseneck hitch to a sturdy 5th-wheel trailer hitch. Wide-stance base offers fore/aft and height adjustments to fit your application. Dual-jaw hitch removes without a trace for full bed access. The cam-action handle is held in the closed position with the included pin and clip. For extra security, you can replace the pin with a sturdy padlock. The shackle on the lock you choose should have a diameter
Heavy, solid, and it fits the 2″x2″ receiver perfectly. A 5/8″ locking hitch pin is now needed. Has to be a locking type because this shackle is so attractive a thief could hardly pass it up. In doing research, I found that hitch pins come in different lengths; I had bought one that was a bit too short to pass through the holes in my Toyota Tacoma receiver, which has 1/2″ thick walls. So beware.
We don’t care what great-grandad told you about looping a tow strap over your 2-inch ball for towing situations. It’s incredibly unsafe, and people have literally died trying to do that. When you pull on a tow strap, it stretches – considerably more than you would ever think. This is intentional & by design, but when you are hooked onto an open hook like this you are begging for trouble. By using Vault Cargo Management’s shackle hitch receiver you now have a closed system. This ensures that the tow strap can’t slip off and go anywhere, protecting both yourself & the people around you.

I ended up buying the Vault Cargo Management Hitch Shackle, the reviews on Amazon were better than the Smittybilt and it was essentially the same price. It has an extra hole so it can be mounted so the shackle is vertical as well. The finish on the product is excellent and that seemed to be a big complaint on the Smittybilt. The link has a short blog post I did with a few pics of the Vault Cargo Hitch.
Next up is the MOTORMIC Shackle Hitch Receiver. The reason I like this one is because of the added accessories that comes with the d ring hitch. They include a hitch receiver pin and also a red isolator so this thing doesn’t clank when hitting the trail. Rated at 11,000 Pounds, more than double the weight of standard truck or Jeep! Designed for rescue in any kind of situation with a multi point mounting like the Mile Marker. The 2-inch Receiver Hitch by MOTORMIC is designed to allow the ¾-inch D-Ring to swing horizontally or vertically for extensive recovery anchor point options. All in all a good choice because of the added bonus items!
Nice Shackles as described, though not really any different than any other shackle, except it says Rhino. I paid extra to get these hoping the powder coating would keep them from rusting. First rain, not ever having been used, rust appeared in the eye hole. They should ecoat, with a zinc phosphate pretreat, then powder coat to make this a great product. Military surplus may be a better option, and paint over the CARC.
