Another safety note is to weigh down the strap or winch cable, (especially a winch cable.) The reason is that if it was to snap the ends would whip around violently, injuring anyone in their way. A heavy blanket thrown over the strap or cable will do the job. Alternatively, if your recovery accessories come in a handy bag, fill it with something heavy and suspend it from the strap.
We don’t care what great-grandad told you about looping a tow strap over your 2-inch ball for towing situations. It’s incredibly unsafe, and people have literally died trying to do that. When you pull on a tow strap, it stretches – considerably more than you would ever think. This is intentional & by design, but when you are hooked onto an open hook like this you are begging for trouble. By using Vault Cargo Management’s shackle hitch receiver you now have a closed system. This ensures that the tow strap can’t slip off and go anywhere, protecting both yourself & the people around you.

The hitch pin is 5/8" in diameter and so has an area of about 0.30 sq-inches. Grade 5 fasteners under 1" have a minimum proof of 85 ksi and grade 8 120 ksi. So a 5/8" grade 5 rod (or bolt with minor diameter of 0.625", so make sure to use a shouldered bolt long enough that the unthreaded part spans both receiver holes) will minimally tolerate about 25,500 lbf and grade 8 about 36,000 lbf without deformation.
This list can go on and on with a ton more of the same d ring hitch receiver options. But this list is a solid option of the best selling and most trusted names in the industry. They are all rated the same and will be able to help you in any off road situation where you need a pull. It will also help in many situations on the street, like helping to tow someone who broke down, or pull that tree out the front yard! Another thing to consider when buy these d ring hitches is a tow strap. All in all I hope this guide helped you locate the d ring hitch you have been looking for.

Just a few measurements we're going to go over real quick starting with the overall length, from very back to the front with the shackle extended out. That's going to give us a measurement of about 11 and a half inches. If we measured just the mount portion without the shackle, that's going to give us a measurement of about 8 inches. Really simple installation. This portion right here is going to be the portion that slides into your 2 and a half inch by 2 and a half inch trailer hitch receiver. You're going to push it in until you get your pin holes lined up with one another in whatever configuration that you want to use this.
Best of all, our hitches are easy to use. Simply pull the side pin and move your hitch up or down to accommodate where your trailer needs to ride. Your Rhino Hitch will be the envy of your friends wherever you go! Whether you’re at the lake, the dunes, the race track, or in the mountains, you can relax knowing that whatever you are towing will be kept safely behind your truck.

The durability of the metal used in designing your truck hitch should be something that everybody takes into account before purchasing one. Since these products are typically made of metal, a common issue that could result is rust and corrosion. For this reason, many manufacturers will make their truck hitches coated so that they are naturally resistant to the weather and rust.

If you already have a rear hitch receiver installed on your vehicle and simply want the most affordable means possible of installing a hitch onto your truck, this might be the option you are looking for. What is great about this truck hitch is that it can easily install on a hitch receiver and be ready to be used by your vehicle within an hour or so. Since its installation only requires the use of everyday hand tools, you won’t need to grab a power drill or anything which requires significant levels of effort.
A fastener is a fastener, they don't have a preference for shear or tension. A grade 5 hitch pin is the same as a grade 5 bolt of the same diameter along the unthreaded length. What you have to watch using a bolt is that you either get it long enough that only the unthreaded part of the bolt is in shear or you adjust the bolt's rating down to the minor diameter compensate. For a 5/8-18 UNF the minor diameter is 0.556".
Assume the whole bar is well attached to the frame rails at each side (otherwise, it's definitely not good for a snatch recovery!). There is a huge difference between pulling on the receiver mount in the middle of the cross-bar, and pulling with a long harness attached to both ends. The direct receiver-mount pull will tend to bend the cross bar outwards, and pull the frame rails in towards each other (with a lot of leverage, on top of the many tons of force imparted by a snatch recovery).
Their yields are 92 ksi and 130 ksi, so a hitch pin would be 27,600 lbf and 39,000 lbf before leaving their elastic region. Where the difference in grade 5 and 8 comes in is that grade 5 has min tensile yield of 120 ksi and grade 8 150 ksi, so each could potentially fail at 40,000 lbf or 50,000 lbf respectively, so obviously there is a broader region where a grade 5 bolt would bend (from 92 to 120 ksi) compared to a grade 8 (from 130 to 150 ksi). But notice that the grade 5 bolt fails before the grade 8 even hits its elastic limit.

We're going to take a measurement of the overall length, basically measuring from very back to very front. We're looking at about 8". If we take a measurement from the center of the hitch pin holes to the back of the shank . so measuring from this one right here to the back of the shank, that's going to give us a measurement. It's going to be 13/16 of an inch.

Recovery straps are an essential item in your off-road gear bag. Straps and shackles might be one of the most important items you can carry around with you at all times in your 4Runner. For the core accessories, you should carry around straps, recovery hitch receivers, shackles, jumper cables, flashlights, general tools, first-aid kits, along with a few others.
I went out to the warehouse to take a look at the Bulldog Winch Receiver Mount with Shackle # BDW20186 referenced in your question. The pin hole that the shackle mounts to has a diameter of right at 1 inch. As you already mentioned, the shackle itself has a 7/8 inch diameter and the shank is a 2-1/2 inch x 2-1/2 inch, Class V receiver mount. This is a really nice, heavy duty mount that has a break strength of 78,000 pounds and a working load limit of 13,000 pounds. I have also attached...
First question I had was if it was square tube or a solid chunk.. it is definitely a solid chunk of steel. This thing has some heft to it, which is a good feeling. I have a 3/4 avalanche that’s heavy. I used this thing right away. First day I watched a heavy loaded military hummer go in the ditch and get stuck, and they let me pull them out. I was right there, so they hadn’t called it in yet.

I ended up buying the Vault Cargo Management Hitch Shackle, the reviews on Amazon were better than the Smittybilt and it was essentially the same price. It has an extra hole so it can be mounted so the shackle is vertical as well. The finish on the product is excellent and that seemed to be a big complaint on the Smittybilt. The link has a short blog post I did with a few pics of the Vault Cargo Hitch.
Smittybilt is a decent brand. They just take generic things and put their name on them and mark them up in price. Their D rings are no different than any others you'd find on Amazon. My buddy put some on his XJ Jeep and the red powdercoat they used was evidently just an epoxy or something else not UV-stable, and faded to pink in a short time. He bought generic replacements for them and they were identical to the Smittybilt.
A shackle hitch receiver is the perfect tow hitch for the recreational off-roader or when you need to tow in a pinch. They fit in most 2” receivers to give you the pulling power you need to tow. The extensive selection at 4 Wheel Parts has everything you need to outfit a recovery kit for the hard-core enthusiast or simply have some better safety gear for your truck. Be prepared with heavy-duty receivers, straps and winches.

With the Grip recovery strap mentioned above, it is a pretty stiff pull/ yank. With nylon, you are supposed to have a much softer yank. When you go from 0-20 and pull someone out, it tends to bounce everything around quite a bit. Then repeat this about 10 times in a day. Yeah, we have been there. The softer and easier you can get those pulls, the easier it is on everything, your back, your 4Runner, and the driver of the other truck.

Nice looking piece, what you would expect from a simple shackle hitch reciever. Shackle itself also a nice piece... down fall is the extremely loose fit in a 2" reciever. Planned on running this full time as a front recovery point in my Trail Gear tube bumper but it rattles and clanks around over any sort of bumps. Ended up purchasing a different shackle hitch reciever for less here on amazon that came with shackle, hitch pin, shackle, polyurethane shackle isolators and it fit nice and snug. If the fit was better I would have been happy with this purchase. Ended up needing to use it and scuffed the finish otherwise I would have returned it.
