For your 2004 Chevy Avalanche the Rhino Rack roof rack part numbers # RREB137B, # RRRLKVA, # RREB-FK1 and # DK227 has been confirmed as a fit and would work well. Your sunroof wouldn't be an issue either. I would recommend keeping it closed since it will be very loud transporting a ladder up there from the wind noise. However, I have a better solution for you in terms of a roof rack for securing a ladder. Instead I would recommend the Rhino Rack HD bar roof rack part numbers # RB1375,...

I recieved this a few days ago. It came in a nicely packed, sturdy box. After opening it up and seeing it for myself, I have to say the quality is awesome! Its a HEAVY shackle. The matte finish on the reciever end is superb (this piece must weigh about 7-10 lbs on its own). The shackle itself has a nice galvanized coating, and weighs about 6-7 lbs! Overall I think it is an awesome addition to any truck, looks great and has all the functionality that you'll probably need out of a shackle. 5/5 would reccomend! 457088

I looked at several similar items before purchasing this one. Where the d-ring bolt goes thru, a couple of other brands had thin "ears" welded to the end of the mount. Not being a believer in factory claims of tow ratings, these didn't have the look of strength they claimed. This hitch appears to be milled from a solid piece of steel. If it indeed is 2 pieces welded together, they did an outstanding job in doing so. Unless I need to use a ball-mount hitch, I plan to leave this mounted in the receiver. To that end, I put some Loctite on the bolt before screwing it into the shackle, and then added a small cable tie from the bolt eye to the shackle. Barring a determined shackle thief, it should always be there if I need it. I can't imagine backing into something that would harm this hitch. The only complaint I have is how loose the mount is in the receiver. Several wrappings of duct tape just in front of the hitch pin hole quieted the rattle. A more snug fit would have earned 5 stars.

Last on the list is the Trailhead multi mount trailer hitch d ring. Very similar to the other Shackles on the list. Has multi point positioning to spin the d ring horizontal and vertical. This one  is rated up to a hefty 11,000 lbs just like the rest. Included is a set of D-Shackle side isolator rings that eliminate shackle rattle when the unit is mounted to your vehicle’s hitch. A little bit from each of the others on the list, this is still a solid option.

I too have their shackle hitch, tow strap and 2 d rings but still haven't needed to use them. Their quality appears to be good and supposedly made in USA. I liked their stuff enough to also purchase and just received today two of their tire pressure gauges since I broke the head off of an old pencil style one. Again quality seems to be pretty good.

The hitch pin is 5/8" in diameter and so has an area of about 0.30 sq-inches. Grade 5 fasteners under 1" have a minimum proof of 85 ksi and grade 8 120 ksi. So a 5/8" grade 5 rod (or bolt with minor diameter of 0.625", so make sure to use a shouldered bolt long enough that the unthreaded part spans both receiver holes) will minimally tolerate about 25,500 lbf and grade 8 about 36,000 lbf without deformation.
Searching for the best truck hitches for towing requires that you carefully consider the price of the model, the towing weight capacity, the type of hitch, and the durability of the materials used in the hitch. If all of these things blend together in a fashion which results in the best possible towing hitch for your personal needs, there is no reason you should hold back on your decision. However, always be sure to purchase something only if you can afford it.

While it is good to have a D ring receive hitch in your Jeep just in case, it is always preferable to avoid a nasty situation in the first place. You should avoid driving in unknown areas or driving over something with an uncertain depth. You also need to drive slowly when possible. However, even the most careful drivers may end up stuck in the mud at one point or another. A D ring hitch is useful, but it is also good if you always carry a first aid kit, jack and shovel in your Jeep, too.
We are going to do follow up posts on all three of these straps. We are going to go get stuck on purpose and then feel what each of these straps can do and cannot do. For the most part, I have a feeling most of these straps will be the same in terms of towing but the Rhino Strap and ARB Recovery Strap might be a little more forgiving when yanking another vehicle from being stuck. Follow along and check back to see how these straps compare against each other for off-road recovery and general towing.
Partially this is so that I can snug everything down and prevent the pin/bolt from vibrating and rotating. With a lock washer the bolt is nice and tight, no movement or rotation to wear anything. I also feel better that the bolt has washers and shoulders for a little more resistance to deflecting or the receiver trying to spread or twist. I just don't like that hitch pins can move around so much.
We're going to take a measurement of the overall length, basically measuring from very back to very front. We're looking at about 8". If we take a measurement from the center of the hitch pin holes to the back of the shank . so measuring from this one right here to the back of the shank, that's going to give us a measurement. It's going to be 13/16 of an inch.
If you want a shackle hitch that can pull impressive weight loads with ease, then this should be one of your top options. With an towing weight capacity of 4-3/4 tons, many people simply won’t even need to pull this much weight. However, being prepared for the worst is better than no preparation at all. This is one of the reasons why many people will get a top-quality truck hitch like this one which boasts a considerably high towing weight capacity.

Third, think about whether you want one hole or two through the receiver block for the hitch pin. The advantage of two is that it lets you insert the shackle hitch with the bolt either horizontal or vertical. The difference depends on whether there's any height difference between the two vehicles. If the vehicle being rescued is down in a ditch for example, it may be helpful to insert the shackle with the bolt horizontal to get some vertical movement.
