Both run all the way through the shank. That's designed so you can use it whether it's in the vertical or horizontal mounting position. You can install it inside your trailer hitch receiver just like this or you can flip it to this position here and still install it inside the same hitch. You can use it in either the horizontal or vertical position. The shackle is removable. This portion right here is just like a large screw.
I ended up buying the Vault Cargo Management Hitch Shackle, the reviews on Amazon were better than the Smittybilt and it was essentially the same price. It has an extra hole so it can be mounted so the shackle is vertical as well. The finish on the product is excellent and that seemed to be a big complaint on the Smittybilt. The link has a short blog post I did with a few pics of the Vault Cargo Hitch.
Today we're going to be taking a look at part number BDW20181. This is the Bulldog Big Dog Shackle. This is the huge oversize shackle that's going to give that truck a nice, big truck look. This portion right here is going to slide into your 2" by 2" trailer hitch receiver. It's going to be great for work trucks that use very large straps.	It's going to feature an 1-1/2" diameter forged alloy steel shackle. It has a really nice zinc plating on it so it is going to stand up really well against rust and corrosion.

You can see the large opening space that we have here. I'll take a measurement of that here in a moment. On the shackle itself it's going to give you the diameter which again is 1-1/2" and then on this side it's going to say WLL, that's working load limit, of 17 tons. This is CNC machined when it comes to the solid steel mount. You can see here on the back side solid steel construction. It has a really nice nickel plating on it so it's going to stand up really well against rust and corrosion too. You're going to notice that it's going to have a 5/8" pin hole here on the side as well as here on the top.
I wonder if that's just theoretical or if it has actually happened though. Hitch pins are so thick I have a hard time picturing one actually bending much less breaking, with the normal loads of recovery.. especially with the elastic recovery strap. Also though, even if it breaks, wouldn't the pin just stay in the reciever while the strap flies out?

Also the bolt through a hitch receiver is in double shear, so unless you are driving a M35 and pulling out an M1A1 it's unlikely that you will stress a hitch pin or bolt to failure yanking out Hiluxes and Wranglers. The only disadvantage IMO to using the loop-and-pin method is convenience, stuffing the strap in can be a pain and sharp edges do need to be smoothed to keep abrasion minimized. But it's a perfectly legitimate and safe way to connect to a recovery point and does eliminate additional connections, which is good.

Considering a hitch pin is meant to be loaded in shear vs the bolt in tensile plus the larger minimum diameter of the pin...I'd go with the pin. The actual block depends on what brand you buy. I think my Smittybuilt is a solid chunk of (Chinese) steel that I really doubt is going to fail before something else. The shackle on the other hand, you'd be better off not getting the Smittybuilt Chinese version.

Thoughts: I posted some pics so you can see the workmanship as well as the fit on my Tacoma. This is not tubed metal; it's casted and is solid (weighs about 9lbs). D-Ring fits perfectly within the block... no wiggle yet can freely spin. No paint chips either. Cannot wait to write a follow-up after my first use and am confident this will be a vital piece of my recovery kit for a long time.

I looked at several similar items before purchasing this one. Where the d-ring bolt goes thru, a couple of other brands had thin "ears" welded to the end of the mount. Not being a believer in factory claims of tow ratings, these didn't have the look of strength they claimed. This hitch appears to be milled from a solid piece of steel. If it indeed is 2 pieces welded together, they did an outstanding job in doing so. Unless I need to use a ball-mount hitch, I plan to leave this mounted in the receiver. To that end, I put some Loctite on the bolt before screwing it into the shackle, and then added a small cable tie from the bolt eye to the shackle. Barring a determined shackle thief, it should always be there if I need it. I can't imagine backing into something that would harm this hitch. The only complaint I have is how loose the mount is in the receiver. Several wrappings of duct tape just in front of the hitch pin hole quieted the rattle. A more snug fit would have earned 5 stars.

While it is good to have a D ring receive hitch in your Jeep just in case, it is always preferable to avoid a nasty situation in the first place. You should avoid driving in unknown areas or driving over something with an uncertain depth. You also need to drive slowly when possible. However, even the most careful drivers may end up stuck in the mud at one point or another. A D ring hitch is useful, but it is also good if you always carry a first aid kit, jack and shovel in your Jeep, too.
This list can go on and on with a ton more of the same d ring hitch receiver options. But this list is a solid option of the best selling and most trusted names in the industry. They are all rated the same and will be able to help you in any off road situation where you need a pull. It will also help in many situations on the street, like helping to tow someone who broke down, or pull that tree out the front yard! Another thing to consider when buy these d ring hitches is a tow strap. All in all I hope this guide helped you locate the d ring hitch you have been looking for.

The picture didn’t do it justice. I have not been able to install it yet. I activated the warentee and I spoke to customer service to see if they were helpful. Right away the people I talked to were really down to earth and friendly, knowldgable and berry helpful. This was my first shackle setup. My first impression is that it’s awesome and very solid. Will definitely help me when I go fishing on the beach if I get stuck. Can’t wait to install on my jeep. Like I told customer service, I really wish that the would come up with a locking hitch pin. The company actually told me it’s in the mix. I already recommended this product to 3 of my Jeeper buds. When they come out with that hitch pin, I will definitely buy it. Overall great product. Cool company made in USA. Awesome powder coat finish. I will upload photos when I install the hitch and then the shackle.
